Proof of God's Existence

Theory of Time

If we were to begin at a point in space that was 13.75 billion miles away from planet earth then we would have to travel 13.75 billion miles in order to reach planet earth. If we were to begin at a point in space that was infinite miles away from planet earth then we would have to travel infinite miles in order to reach planet earth. But infinity is a number that can never be reached and therefore we would never actually reach planet earth. And so if we were to begin at a point somewhere in space then in order to reach planet earth we must begin at a point that is only a finite number of miles away from planet earth.
Now suppose we were to begin at a point in time that was 13.75 billion years in the past then it would take us 13.75 billion years in order to reach present day (which at the time of writing this article is 25th July 2012). If we were to begin at a point in time that was infinite years in the past then it would take us an infinite number of years in order to reach this present day. But infinity is a number that can never be reached and therefore we would never actually reach this present day. And so, in order to have reached this present day, time must have had an absolute beginning. There must have been a point, a moment, when time actually began in order for there to have been only a finite number of years from the very beginning of time to this present day.
The Universe must have an Absolute Beginning
Likewise if the universe did not have an absolute beginning, if it was caused by a big bang that was caused by another big bang which was caused by something else and so on in infinite regression, then the universe itself would never have reached this present moment in time, the universe itself would never have reached its present state of existence. And so just as time must have an absolute beginning in order for us to have reached this present day, so also the entire universe must have an absolute beginning for it to have reached this present day, for it to have reached its present state of existence.
There must have been a moment when time actually began, before which there was no time. And there must have been a moment when the universe began, when the reality of a physical world began, when existence began; before which nothing could have existed. But something cannot suddenly appear from nothing, and existence cannot suddenly begin from absolute non-existence, and time cannot suddenly begin without something to cause this beginning. And so what brought about this absolute beginning, what caused something to suddenly appear from absolutely nothing, what caused existence to begin from absolute non-existence, what caused the absolute beginning of time?
There must be a God
There must be a higher reality, an utterly transcendent other, something or someone that exists outside of time and space, above and beyond time and space, outside of our own existence. There must be something or someone which brought about the absolute beginning of time. There must be an utterly transcendent other which caused things to suddenly come into existence. There must be a transcendent other whom we name God.
This does not mean that science and religion are in conflict with one another. Science looks at the things caused; the things brought into existence, the things created from out of nothing by this transcendent other. Science looks at the way these things evolve and develop with time. The study of the origins of the universe is an attempt to find the very first thing that was brought into existence; it is an attempt to learn something about what happened at the very moment of creation, the moment when time and physical existence began.
Whereas religion looks above and beyond time and space to the transcendent other. Religion seeks to know the transcendent other. And despite the personal faults and failings of individual human beings, religion is an attempt to give praise and worship to the origin and source of all that exists, to the one who brought about the initial moment of creation, the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega, our Creator God.
